Global Medical Training: Nicaragua

Donation protected
Hello! My name is Miriam Stokes, and I am currently a freshman as University of Missouri, who has been given the amazing opportunity to travel this winter break to Nicaragua with Global Medical Training (GMT). Now, I know most of you haven’t heard anything about GMT, so here’s a little info about who we are and how these trips are made possible.

Who
: GMT is an International Humanitarian Organization in which students provide free medical services to poor communities in Central American Countries. GMT offers healthcare students and professionals an international experience that will expand their understanding of medicine and life outside of the United States, Improving the conditions and well being of a global humanity.

What: On this trip we will be taught how to diagnose and prescribe the most common illness in Nicaragua in 5 different clinics in the area. This could be the only medical attention these people get all year. Furthermore, we will be giving public health lessons in preventative medicine, such as boiling water before you drink it, to help their health in the future.

Where: Countries all around Central America, this winter: Nicaragua.

Why Nicaragua: Nicaragua is the poorest country in Central America, and the second poorest in the Hemisphere. 48% of the population live below the poverty line, 79.9% of the population live with less than $2 per day. 22% of children of children suffer from malnutrition. Life expectancy after birth is 70%, only 40% in rural areas.

When: The trip will take place January 6-14, 2016, however, funding is due Novemeber 23, 2015.

How: You may be wondering: how can a bunch of poor college kids can afford to go on such an amazing trip like this out of their own pocket? The truth is, we can't. We need the support of those around us who believe in the actions we are doing. This trip, to me, is so much more then just a fun vacation to put on Instagram, or to brag about when ever I come home. This trip going to play a very important stepping stone in my career as a nursing student. The experience from this trip goes so much further than just giving me hand on experience in my field of study. This trip exposes me to another culture, another way of life. As a nursing student it has become my passion to serve others through medicine. This goes beyond just wanting to help people, but rather to be able to use my knowledge and resources to help educate in the world of medicine, and that is what this trip allows me to do. If you need any more convincing this trip is a worthy cause check out this video from Mizzou's 2011 GMT trip to Panama: http://vimeo.com/20262320

I truly cannot thank enough for all the help you are providing me!
