In her early 20s, Brooke was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis, an autoimmune disease that attacked the entire colon. At age 30, she underwent a colectomy with J-pouch reconstruction—a surgery meant to restore her quality of life and give her the chance to move forward.

But for the past 13 years, she has faced relentless challenges, enduring chronic obstructions and functional issues that have stripped away her health and stability. Despite every setback, she has continued to persevere with remarkable strength.

Recently, Brooke came under the care of world-renowned J-pouch specialists Dr. Bo Shen and Dr. Pokala Ravi Kiran at Columbia University / NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. This expert team represents the very best hope for patients with rare and complex pouch complications. Dr. Shen has already performed advanced, novel repair techniques to correct mechanical issues—a pioneered procedure available nowhere else in the world.

Unfortunately, after years of damage, her pouch also suffers from severe functional problems that require intensive, ongoing therapy and procedures to preserve it. Her physicians have recommended that she temporarily relocate to the New York / New Jersey area, where she will receive ongoing treatment in hopes of saving her pouch and helping her regain stability.

This care is out of network with her current insurance, and the cost of living near Columbia is extremely high. Between medical bills, lodging, transportation, and daily expenses, Brooke is facing an overwhelming financial challenge—one no one should face alone while fighting for their health.
