Education Changes Everything
I invite you to think about a person, who has had a positive impact on your life.
In my case, that person was my grandmother. She influenced my life in many wonderful ways. Mainly, by insisting I stay in school.
I think this is why, even today, many years later, I feel a mix of emotions, whenever I work with students faced with serious obstacles on their way to achieving, their academic goals.
My grandmother left an incredible mark in my life; we were like Batman and Robin –fighting all obstacles together. And although, we didn’t have much, our biggest strength, was to always stay together.
“You have the chance to study. That’s the only legacy I can pass on to you. I guarantee, it will change your life”. These are some of the things she used to say to me that still resonate in my mind, and all I needed to hear every time I felt the urge to start working full time, so I could contribute with the household’s expenses. All those times I was ready to give up…I still remember her face, her gaze, her eternal smile, and her wise words: “Don’t give up, keep going”…
I will never forget her face beaming with pride and joy, when I graduated from high school, and later from college. She taught me, that in life everyone has a contribution to make, as well as a personal and social responsibility. She also insisted, above all, that it’s impossible to achieve anything significant, without our family’s support. In addition to the encouragement of people, who leave a lasting impression on us during our lifetime.
With this in mind, I’ve confirmed that education, has the power of changing everything. It changed my own life, as well as that of the students I work with; it’s not only a matter of acquiring knowledge, it’s also a powerful avenue that leads to personal reinvention, self-improvement, and the willingness to help others.
My belief in education as a vehicle for change, has motivated me to develop and be responsible during the last 14 years, for several social projects oriented to promote access to education for hundreds of students living in poverty in Central America –attaining incredible results that have contributed to improving, the quality of life of this population. Without a doubt, these results have been achieved as a consequence of my own efforts, as well as the support of my family, friends, co-workers, and dozens of people, who have contributed, in many different ways.
I now face, a new challenge and a new opportunity, as I was recently accepted into the Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design, one of the most important innovated hubs, in Denmark and Europe.
I was one of the 24 people selected, among hundreds of applications submitted worldwide, and have now, become the first Costa Rican, to be accepted into this institution.
My participation in this specialized program, is aimed at laying the foundation to developing, a project that will allow us to strengthen, the educational process of young refugees and migrants, throughout Latin America, Africa, and Asia. This objective emerged, once I became aware of the distressing reality of these young men and women and their families, who have been ripped away from the safety of their homes. The urge to take action, was intensified when my children were born, and I decided to build a better world for them, and for all the sons and daughters of those, who haven’t had the chance, to fight for a different life.
This aspiration comes, from my conviction that each person can make a significant contribution – according to his/her capabilities – towards generating a change, and positively impacting other people’s lives.
Thanks to my grandmother, education opened a world of opportunities for me. She made me discover the power of supporting others and the importance of teamwork. For this reason, I am now turning to you, as I need your assistance to continue, finding new avenues to help other people access better opportunities, such as the ones I was lucky enough to have. I am absolutely certain, that education changes everything.
Lastly, I want to ask you: when was the last time you felt a burst of energy invade your life? In addition to feeling an enormous amount of strength and motivation towards achieving a dream?
This is the way I feel today, and that’s why I’m asking for your kind support. I am committed and pledged, to do my best, to benefit from my experience and knowledge, and to continue learning, so as to reach this goal.

La educación lo cambia todo
Le invito a pensar en una persona que impactó profundamente su vida de forma positiva …
Esa persona en mi vida fue mi abuelita, lo hizo de muchas formas maravillosas, pero una de las que más me marcó fue con su insistencia en que no abandonara las aulas, que continuara estudiando...
Creo que, por esa razón, hoy muchos años después, siento una mezcla de emociones cada vez que trabajo con jóvenes, que por diversas circunstancias, enfrentan serias dificultades para continuar estudiando.
Mi abuelita marcó para siempre mi vida, juntos nos llegamos a convertir en una especie de Batman y Robin, luchando contra todo tipo de obstáculos, y aunque no teníamos mucho nuestra fortaleza fue mantenernos siempre unidos.
“Vos tenés la oportunidad de estudiar”, “Esa es la única herencia que yo puedo dejarte”, “Eso cambiará tu vida”, son algunas de las frases que aún siguen en mi mente, esos argumentos desarmaban por completo mi intención de dedicarme únicamente a trabajar y contribuir con los gastos de la casa… tantas veces pensé en renunciar… aún recuerdo su rostro, su mirada, su eterna sonrisa y sus palabras diciéndome: no te rindas, sigue adelante…
Jamás olvidaré su rostro de orgullo y felicidad al recibir mi título de colegio y más adelante el de universidad, de ella aprendí que todos tenemos algo que aportar, que tenemos una responsabilidad personal y social, pero, sobre todo, que nadie logra nada significativo sin el apoyo de la familia y de personas que en el camino dejan huella en tu vida.
Con estas enseñanzas en mi mente, he constatado no sólo en mi vida, sino en la vida de los jóvenes con los que trabajo que la educación tiene el poder de cambiarlo todo, no solo es una cuestión de conocimiento, es un camino inagotable para reinventarse, para construir algo diferente, para buscar ser mejores y ayudar a otros a intentarlo.
Esa consigna me ha motivado a lo largo de estos últimos catorce años a desarrollar y liderar diversos proyectos sociales orientados a promover el acceso a la educación en cientos de jóvenes en condición de pobreza en Centroamérica, logrando resultados increíbles que han contribuido a mejorar la calidad de vida de estas personas, sin lugar a dudas, esto ha sido no sólo gracias a mi esfuerzo, sino al apoyo de mi familia, amigos, compañeros, y decenas de personas que se han sumado desde diferentes formas.
Ahora enfrento un nuevo reto y una nueva oportunidad, recientemente he sido aceptado en el Copenhagen Institute of Interaction Design, uno de los hub de innovación más importante en Dinamarca y Europa, siendo una de las 24 personas seleccionadas entre cientos de aplicaciones a nivel mundial y el primer costarricense en ser aceptado en dicha institución.
Mi participación en el programa de especialización, tiene como propósito sentar las bases para desarrollar un proyecto que permita fortalecer el proceso educativo de los jóvenes refugiados y migrantes en América Latina, África y Asia. Esta meta nació al constatar la angustiante realidad que viven estos jóvenes y sus familias, al ser arrancados de la seguridad de su hogar, nació de contemplar a mis hijos y el deseo de construir mundo mejor para ellos y los hijos de aquellos que no han tenido la misma oportunidad de forjar una vida distinta.
Esta meta surge de la convicción de que cada persona puede contribuir desde sus posibilidades en llevar luz a otras, cada uno de nosotros tiene el poder de generar un cambio e impactar de forma positiva la vida de los demás.
Gracias a mi abuelita, la educación abrió un mundo de oportunidades para mí, gracias a ella, descubrí también el poder del apoyo de otros y el trabajo en conjunto. Es por eso que, hoy me dirijo a usted. Porque necesito su ayuda para para poder seguir construyendo un camino para ayudar a otras personas a alcanzar mejores oportunidades como lo hice yo. Pues tengo la plena certeza que la educación lo cambia todo.
Para finalizar le pregunto, ¿Cuándo fue la última vez en su vida que se sintió invadido de energía, con una enorme fuerza y motivación por alcanzar un sueño?
Hoy yo me siento así, por eso le solicito y agradezco su apoyo. Por eso, hoy me comprometo con usted a esforzarme, aprovechar mi experiencia y mi conocimiento, a continuar aprendiendo, para lograr esta meta.
