Hi, I'm Miette, a sophomore in high school and I'm raising money to study in Germany in August 2019 for a year! I have already been accepted into a great foreign exchange program and will be studying in a German high school. I've got two(!) jobs, bussing tables in a restaurant and summer camp counselor.
While the bulk of my expenses are covered by a scholarship from the German and United States governments, there are some needs that I am raising money for, such as books, school supplies, field trips, sports and club costs (I'd love to continue swim team when abroad!), a year-round bus or train pass, computer, clothes, good shoes to walk around Europe in, warm coat, general hygiene products like shampoo, toothpaste, etc...feminine products, and decent bras cause I'm a girl YO!
You might want to know why I became interested in studying in Germany at such a young age. I had a really devoted and inspirational German teacher in the seventh grade at Hixson Middle School, and she told me about studying in Germany and how much it impacted her life. I studied German with her for two years and the entire time she encouraged me to apply to be a foreign exchange student and to push my learning by traveling.
I learned that Germany is one of the best countries in the world to study sustainable engineering and environmental issues which is what I want to study. I've always wanted to help solve the energy crisis and climate change problems to make the world better. I figure studying in Germany will not only help me to learn in a country that is devoted to improving the climate but help me learn about a new culture and improve my world view with travel and becoming truly fluent in a second language.
My family is what people refer to as low income, my mom is disabled, and I want to relieve the burden on them with the money I've saved working and through this GoFundMe campaign.
