Baby Caleb was born a couple of weeks early via an emergency c-section on July 1, 2022, weighing around 4lbs. After the delivery, he was rushed to Children's Hospital in St Paul, MN via ambulance to ensure he was healthy and stable. He was only just over three weeks early and had a great first day! After about 24 hours, things went downhill and he was transferred to Children's Hospital in Minneapolis. He had a few seizures, which led to scans showing fluid in his brain and blood on both sides of his head. Surgery to remove the fluid was successful on July 3rd when a drain was put in. Caleb was recovering nicely until he became very ill with an infection that they determined was Meningitis. Caleb began the 3 week treatment for Meningitis and began recovery from the infection. A follow-up MRI was performed recently to check on the progress of his brain healing and they discovered the blood had not cleared up as they were hoping. On August 1st, he had a second surgery to drain that blood from both sides of his head. They were able to drain the blood from one side, but a reservoir was put in to slowly drain the blood from the other side over the next few months. He will have another surgery to remove the reservoir when that has cleared in a few months. Since he was born, he has been having a lot of issues with his belly as well. A biopsy was performed on July 29th which showed he has Hirschsprung's disease (Hirschsprung disease occurs when nerve cells in the intestines don't develop normally before an infant is born). Jess and Kyle will work with surgeons again tomorrow and this week to schedule a third surgery to address and begin treating this disease.
Every time Caleb is un-swaddled or held, his hands and legs shoot into the air showing the world that he loves being "free." He is a fighter and wants us to know he is not giving up.
His parents, Jessica and Kyle, have been at his side since birth. We know they haven’t been able to even think of what the incoming medical bills are going to be for Caleb's ambulance transfers to two hospitals, such a lengthy stay in the NICU, the costs they are incurring by not being home (i.e. food; gas, etc.), and the extra care Caleb may need once he can go home.
The updates are changing by the hour and it's heartbreaking. Every moment matters so much right now and is part of his journey. Kyle and Jessica are going through an emotional rollercoaster and it is sad seeing their little family go through this.
We appreciate the prayers, donations, and support during this scary time for this family! We don't know what tomorrow- or even the rest of the day will bring. We are taking the small wins as this little boy is a fighter! You have a whole world that loves you so much and is cheering you on, Caleb!
Updates to come. You can follow this page as I’ll be keeping updates posted- one less thing Kyle and Jesse have to do as they already cannot keep up with all of the messages they are receiving. They are trying to stay disconnected and spend as much time with Caleb right now as possible. THANK YOU ALL.
