My friend, Laurie, was just diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic pancreatic cancer. She is 49 years old. Laurie is the sole caregiver to her daughter, Meagan, who is permanently disabled. Meagan was in a near fatal car accident 7 years ago. As a result, she has a severe brain injury and requires 24/7 care. This care includes entertainment, making Meagan's life fun as well as social activities, hygiene, getting her to many doctor's appointments and the therapy she needs to continue to improve. Laurie is her daughter's biggest advocate and her best cheerleader.
Laurie knows all too well the road that is ahead because her mother died of pancreatic cancer in 2014. Laurie has just started chemotherapy and will need it for the rest of her life, or until it stops being effective. She has been told her life may not be very long; life expectancy is 6% after one year.
Laurie is afraid of what will happen to her children, Meagan and Colby, if she can't beat this. She worries what will happen if she becomes too sick to care for Meagan. Laurie is concerned about the burden of Meagan's care being placed on Colby.
