In June, Bob was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) a preleukemia that can turn into AML. It is a form of cancer in which immature blood cells in the bone marrow do not mature or become healthy blood cells. The Physicians are thinking that this resulted from previous chemotherapy and radiation he recieved 29 years ago when he was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma.
Bob is in the process of receiving chemotherapy to try and get his cancer cells down and is also having blood transfusions and platelet transfusions to help with the decreasing WBC's, Hemaglobin and Platelet Counts. The goal is to get a stem cell transplant and try to cure the disease process. His sister Elaine and two daughters, Megan and Heather, have been tested to see if they were a match and God Has Answered Our prayers and his sister Elaine is a 100% match. When the stem cell transplant takes place Bob will be required to stay in the hospital in Sioux Falls for 4-6 weeks to monitor for any reactions and then if all goes well will be released. For an additional 2 months he will then be required to stay within 15 minutes of the hospital which means finding a place to rent. This is going to be quite a process but will be well worth it in the end.
Before the stem cell process can begin however, Bob will need to have an aortic valve replacement. Due to the previous radiation it caused the valve to scar and now does not allow as much blood flow through as it should. In order to get the valve replacement done though we need Bob's platelets to reach at least 100,000 or more. Currently the platelets are at 27,000. Prayers are continuously needed through this process and we hope everyday that Bob's numbers will get better and better. Bob has a great team of physicians working on his case and are doing everything they can to make this journey as smooth as possible. With all of the doctors visits, medications, transfusions and hospital stays, costs have continued to increase. Any support/donations would be greatly appreciated by Bob and his family.
