GINA SORBERA MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP AT IS#24
We remember the loss on June 23, 2014, of my sister Gina. Beyond the love of her children, family and friends, the outpouring of love and respect demonstrated by her students and colleagues at Intermediate School #24 that year was, to say the least, awesome. In addition to attending the wake, funeral, and cemetery services, literally hundreds of students, staff, parents and colleagues lined the street in front of IS #24 as Gina’s funeral procession passed by to demonstrate their appreciation for all she had contributed to each of them via her many years of service as a Spanish language arts teacher at her beloved school, IS #24. Shortly after Gina’s funeral, several very generous and wonderful people made donations to IS#24 in Gina’s name. Using these funds the administration of IS#24, under the leadership of Principal Santamaria, established a memorial scholarship that will award $500.00 per year to qualified graduating students for each of the subsequent five years.
Inspired by the impact of this scholarship when it was first awarded in June of 2015, Gina’s family established an endowment such that the Gina Sorbera Memorial Scholarship at IS#24 may be awarded in perpetuity. This endowment requires a total of approximately $15,000.00 to be able to yield a net value of $500.00 per year. Thus, our challenge is to raise the required endowment funding over the next five years before the present funding runs out.
Over the past, so many of Gina’s family, friends, students, and colleagues have asked about ways to honor her life and memory. Many have already generously donated to her memorial scholarship endowment fund. We continue to work toward reaching the required $ 15K goal. Please join us by going to the GoFundMe website
Thank you all so much for the love and respect you have shown Gina and our family. May God bless her and all of you.
