Maddie's campaign for Cancer Research UK
Cancer is a disease that is incredibly close to my heart, it affects hundreds of thousands of families yearly including my own. Screening is incredibly important to detect early stages of cancer before any symptoms show, during these early stage’s treatment is far more effective. With around 200,000 people per week no longer being screened for bowel, breast and cervical cancers across the country due to COVID-19, there will be a significant number of early cancers left undetected.
My incredible Mummy has experienced first-hand the problems COVID-19 has had on cancer diagnosis and available treatment. I want to do my bit in helping support the incredible charities who are extremely overwhelmed at the moment and struggling to cope with the high demand during these difficult times.
With this said, 367,000 people are diagnosed every single year in the UK with a form of cancer, with 200 different forms of cancer currently known. The cancer closest to my heart is breast cancer, the most prevalent cancer in the UK with 55,000 women diagnosed annually & 370 men. Whilst 9/10 women diagnosed with breast cancer survive the disease, 35,000 develop secondary breast cancer (when the cancer has spread to other areas of the body) though this is treatable, there is currently no known cure. The more devastating statistic is that pre COVID-19, 5% of women with breast cancer developed secondary breast PRIOR to their initial diagnosis. Every 10 minutes someone is diagnosed with breast cancer.
If you chuck all those numbers into a fancy equation (which if asked to reproduce I’d struggle), you can reach the number 367. With this number in mind, I would absolutely love to give something back to Cancer Research UK & play my part in helping them fight cancer Cancer Research UK & all charities alike survive from fundraisers, most of which have been cancelled this year due to COVID-19. Please help me provide the support they desperately rely on
I propose to run 367km between 1st November and 31st December which is on average 6k a day over the next 61 days. Whilst, for the normal Mo Farah, this challenge right come across as rather unchallenging, but for the typical Mads, it’s going to take a lot of blood, sweet & alcohol. I will upload all my runs to Strava for anyone to follow.
I’m so immeasurably grateful for the incredible work this charity is responsible for & it would mean the absolute world to me if any of my close family and friends could donate any small amount to my fundraising page and share this on their newsfeed. I understand times are hard for everyone during this pandemic, but any small support would mean everything. My goal is £367. Let’s help beat cancer
I’m doing this for my Mummy who is the strongest woman I know & who is doing an unbelievable job at fighting cancer, whilst being the best role model a daughter could have
