These are my parents and my little brother. Several weeks ago, they were robbed of $55,000 in cash from their own home. They had been keeping cash in their bedroom to make it easier to send money to Mexico for grandpa’s medical treatment and emergency use. I intend to share this unfortunate event to hopefully alleviate some of the financial and emotional hardship my parents are facing, given that this was a large portion of their retirement money.
This year has been a particularly difficult year for my parents. It began with the devastating loss of Grandpa, followed by the unexpected search for a new home. The landlord asked for the house back to have his son move in. After living in this house for 13 years, finding a new home that fits their needs and is semi-affordable was challenging.
- On Sunday. The money was last seen (2/28/22)
- On Monday. The landlord brought in a plumber to work on one of the bathrooms. He had already been making frequent visits to work on other things around the property. Despite my parents expressing to the landlord that he was making them uncomfortable and giving them added stress amidst their move, he insisted. My parents consented out of respect for their long acquaintanceship. They were reassured that he, the landlord, would be present while the plumber worked.
- On Tuesday. The landlord, with No advanced notice, came to take pictures of the work done the day before; my parents once again agreed to it and left him in the house unattended to take my little brother downtown.
- On Wednesday morning, my dad noticed ALL of the money was gone.
My parents reported it to the authorities, fingerprints were taken, and there is a pending investigation on the incident.
My parents may never know who took their hard-earned money, but whoever took it, that person not only took their peace, their hopes for their future, their countless days of showing up to work with painful joints, achy backs, and swollen arthritic fingers.
They are left distraught, with restless nights, with the feeling of someone invading their privacy, and the thief’s presence lingers in their home.
As their daughter, I know all my parents' sacrifices to earn have had such savings. It is painful to see my aging parents be weighed down by such loss; they are one of the most humble, hardworking, incredibly caring beings I know.
Thank you for taking the time to read their story and for any contributions you can make to recover some of their loss, hopefully. My family will immensely appreciate your kindness.
