Hello, my name is Pamela Spath and I’m Dave’s daughter-in-law. On July 29th, Dave suffered a massive stroke. Dave spent a week at Memorial Hospital, where he received wonderful care before being transported to an outpatient facility. On August 26th he was transferred to a rehabilitation facility in Petaluma. We were told his insurance would cover the first 100 days and then after that he his insurance would evaluate what they would continue to pay for. Unfortunately, that is not the case. His insurance has decided Dave is not making the progress they want or expect (because every stroke patient is the same??) so they have terminated his benefits. We are now stuck in limbo of the bureaucratic nonsense of insurance. We appealed the denial, which was quickly denied. We have appealed that denial, which can take weeks. We are in the process of applying for Medi-Cal, but that can take 4-6 months. So, in the meantime, we are having to pay out-of-pocket. The cost per month is $11,250 ($375 per day), which is incredibly expensive. I have started this GoFundMe to help cover the cost of Dave’s stay at the rehabilitation center until we can get the insurance nightmare sorted out. Dave is a man who is larger than life and every stranger is a friend waiting to happen. Just today (9/16) he said, “don’t give up on me. I’m not done fighting.” Even if you can’t donate, your continued love, support, and prayers are very much appreciated.
