Walk with me

Walk with Me, Marcus Ryan, in memory of my mum Josephine, who lived with dementia. I will be climbing Keeper Hill, on 17th February 2024 to raise funds for the Alzheimer’s Society of Ireland.

My mum was diagnosed in 2012 with early onset dementia at the age of 57. In 2009 she noticed changes in her visual perception and started experiencing hallucinations. We knew that all was not right, and she underwent many reviews, tests, and consultations before finally getting the diagnosis in 2012.

The specific type of dementia she was diagnosed with was Posterior Cortical Atrophy (PCA), also known as Benson's Syndrome. Thankfully with the right care a lot of the symptoms were managed, and mum continued to work until 2014. She continued to be active after retiring due to ill health, and particularly enjoyed walks around the locality. Due to the progressive nature of dementia my mum’s communication skills and physical abilities declined over the years and she lost her battle in October 2019. Over the 8 years my mum, and we as a family, were provided with supports and services from ASI that we know to be invaluable to those living with dementia. The aim of this walk is to raise funds which will go towards direct care provision (Day Care, Home Care, Respite, and Information & Advisory Services) that the society provides to those living with dementia and their families, carers and communities.
