HELP YOUR FUTURE ENVIRONMENTALIST ATTEND UNIVERSITY.
“The activist is not the man who says the river is dirty. The activist is the man who cleans up the river” a quote by Ross Perot. I am Iyanla Reid a proud Jamaican and future Environmental Scientist and Activist. My passion is to not just help myself but also to help my environment, which includes our people. My love for the environment exceeds what words can express. I believe in doing my part to save nature through my current and future activities. I use my Youtube platform (Iyanla Reid) to teach Geography and Environmental Science videos to students in secondary school. In that space, I raise awareness of different environmental issues, such as pollution, the destruction of our coral reefs, natural disasters, global warming, etc. In my community in Jamaica, I was the youth club President. During my tenure, I spearheaded and participated in parks and drain cleaning and recycling projects. In Jamaica, I received the grade A in 17 subjects, which I have completed at the Caribbean Examination Level. I completed these at my amazing high school Wolmer's High School for Girls.
With that in mind, I applied for the Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. I am proud to say that I was accepted and I am currently enrolled. It did not end there for me, I also applied to one of their Premier Programs, Razors Edge Leadership. I am enthused to be one of sixteen students out of hundreds of applicants to get a scholarship in that competitive program. At Nova, I am majoring in Environmental Science.
With my degree, my aim is to help build a more equitable, healthy, and sustainable society that we all can live in. I also want to help reward my family with success. My mother is a single parent, who continues to do her best for us. I want attending University to be an achievement my younger brother aims for as he gets older. I also want to give back to my fellow Jamaicans; members of my community, my school, and everyone who has helped me along my journey.
I want to study in the United States for many reasons. One of which is to meet and diversify among many cultures. Another reason is to gain a global perspective on different issues, especially those surrounding the environment. I want to use my global knowledge and apply it to local issues we face in Jamaica to propose sustainable and efficient solutions. Finally, Nova Southeastern University has a wonderful program dedicated to Environmental Science which will allow me the knowledge I need to make a meaningful global impact.
I have successfully completed one semester at University with a 4.0 GPA average. I am proud of myself. and I know those who know me are also proud. I am currently in my second semester, but I fear will not be able to continue due to heavy financial constraints. I am currently out $12,000 for my current semester and I am not sure where the funds will come from. I would sincerely appreciate your help, as I continue to strive for excellence at this institution.
Since being here, I have volunteered my time to numerous relief programs and services, because I believe in giving back to the community. I also enjoy making others' days better by sharing the kindness of my heart.
