In David’s words, “this was not on my bingo card.”
Over the last week, David’s gums have been bleeding, and on Saturday, his nose started bleeding on the way to the gym. He went to the ER because his cardiologist recently changed his blood thinner, and they initially thought it was causing complications. However, his blood work was way off, with white blood cell counts high and platelets low, so they transferred him to the oncology department at Spartanburg Regional.
He received several infusions of blood and platelets, but labs continued to deteriorate. David had a bone marrow biopsy on Monday that will give definitive information. David has received a preliminary diagnosis of Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia (APL). Due to the aggressive onset, David received his first round of chemo last night. We will have more information about his treatment plan in the coming days. Landry got to see David at the “special Dr. House.” Gibbs Cancer Center will be his home for the next month.
Please keep our family in your prayers as we navigate this. APL can be cured, and you know our family never backs down from a challenge. David will beat this!
To all of our athletes: David has always been your biggest cheerleader to keep fighting, and now he needs you to cheer him on! #DoItForDavid
