Scott (Scotty, Walt, Wally, Scooter) Walters was diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia almost one year ago. The day that forever changed the entire Walters family.
In a blink of an eye, Scott went from being the All American guy who loved spending time with his family, volunteering at the missions, riding his bike, and having long conversations with friends (and even strangers) to now spending all his time bed bound in and out of the hospital. Scott, who chose a career as a LifeFlight helicopter pilot, helped save lives is now the one in need of help.
This past year was filled with many adjustments for the Walters family and coping with this “new” normal. Scott had to miss many family celebrations/milestones, music recitals, church plays, soccer practices, daily dad duties, etc.
Aggressive treatment for AML started immediately. In March, Scott underwent a bone marrow transplant where fortunately his younger sister, Susie, was his donor ... a perfect 10/10 match. Even though he received this life saving transplant, he experienced (currently experiencing) many painful side effects.
So far, Scott’s endured long stays in the hospital, endless chemo treatments, feeding tubes, excruciating body pain, mouth sores, blood & platelet transfusions, BK virus, days in the ICU, and the absolute worst of it.... battling graft versus host disease (GVHD).
On Saturday 7/14, Scott celebrated his 42nd birthday in the hospital. He has been in the hospital going on 15 consecutive weeks due to complications of the GVHD disease.
Through it all, Scott remains charismatic and never loses that sparkle in his eye. He continues to have that infectious smile and unwavering positive attitude.
Every day, Scott focuses on getting stronger and returning to his daily life as a husband to Alicia and father of 5 (Elena, Jenna, Kate, Lauren and Silas).
Scott also looked forward to returning to his job as a pilot. Scott was a lieutenant in the US Navy. His passion for flying started 20+ years ago first graduating from University of Pittsburgh and then attending flight school at the Naval Air Station. Scott officially earned his wings in 2000.
Scott was featured on the local news several times talking about his role as a pilot. He was even showcased at his kids’ school where the students and teachers got to see the cockpit and view the controls.
Although he loved his job as a pilot; he has to leave it behind. Due to the AML diagnosis, he is no longer eligible to fly due to federal guidelines and regulations.
Scott and his family face another hurdle when he returns home...a new career path.
The road has been a long one and will continue to be for the next few years. Through Gods Grace, Scott and the Walters family have been able to stay strong.
Thank you for your continued prayers and limitless support throughout this challenging year. We ask that you continue to pray for Scott and his family and that if you are in a position to offer a financial gift, please consider doing so.
Your generous gift will contribute to ongoing medical bills, family expenses, and help Scott transition to a new career path once he’s home.
Thank you and God Bless!
*** I was recently told a kind hearted young woman from Scott’s church started a gofundme without knowing one was planned by his family. Thank you for the contributions that already have been raised! Scott and his family are so loved!
