I don’t even know how to put this into words. My 4-year-old daughter, Wynter, is currently in the ICU at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children fighting for her life. She has severe swelling across her entire brain and is on a ventilator because she cannot breathe on her own. Doctors are still searching for answers, but it appears to be some type of aggressive viral infection. Wynter is nonverbal and autistic. She already faces challenges every day, and now she is battling something none of us were prepared for. She cannot tell me what hurts. She cannot tell me what she’s feeling. I sit beside her, holding her hand, watching machines breathe for my baby, praying she can feel that her mommy is there. I have not left her side. I sleep here. I pray here. I live here right now. I’ve been told I must return to work by February 26th or risk losing my job, but how do you walk away when your child is fighting to survive? I am running out of money for bills, food, and the unexpected expenses that come with a medical emergency like this.
