Hi, my name is Chantelle, and I’m reaching out for support for my 14-year-old son, Phoenix.

Phoenix was diagnosed with severe scoliosis and underwent major surgery on March 3 2026 at McMaster University to correct the curvature of his spine. While we are grateful the surgery is behind him, his recovery journey is just beginning and comes with many challenges.

Phoenix also lives with Hay-Wells syndrome and has the cognitive ability of an 8–9 year old child, along with learning disabilities. He requires extra care, patience, and support during this time. At home, I am also caring for his younger brother, Carter, who is 11 and nonverbal with autism, so life is very busy but my boys are my whole world.

To help Phoenix recover and regain some independence, doctors have recommended several medical aids and supports. These supports will not only help him regain his independence, but will also ease some of the daily care I currently provide for him, including helping him shower, taking him to and from the bathroom, and getting him dressed just some of the many things he needs help with each day.

In addition, he requires iron supplements (Feramax) and Ensure due to low iron levels costs that unfortunately are not covered by my insurance. We are also facing ongoing expenses with frequent hospital visits (3-4 a month frequently), including parking and rising gas costs.

I am doing everything I can to support my son, but I cannot do this alone. I truly wouldn’t be able to get through this without the love and support of our church family, our friends, and God Himself, who continues to give me strength each and every day.
