Sherpa home reconstruction, Nepal

Donation protected
Seeking donations to help rebuild the family home of Dasonam Sherpa in Pangboche, Nepal!

Four generations of Sherpa are pictured above. The photo was shot in their home in October of 2014.

In April 2015 a massive earthquake struck Nepal. Nearly 9,000 people died, and 23,000 were injured. The country was devastated, and large segments of the population were left homeless.

Here is Dasonam Sherpa's home after the first earthquake struck:
After the second quake, the rear wall also fell out of his home:

Dasonam's family are now living in donated tents:

We are three students and two dads from Truckee (near Lake Tahoe), California. In October 2014, we went trekking in the Everest region.  Pictured below are Zachary and Derek Larson in Durbar Square, Kathmandu, standing on a structure that was destroyed just six months later:

Here is a Dr. Jonathan Laine and his son Sawyer at a rest stop along the trail:

This trip was guided by Dasonam Sherpa who became friends with Derek on a climbing trip in Tibet. What an amazing guy. He has been to the summit of Everest ten times! In the previous year, Dasonam had lost many friends in the tragedy on Mount Everest, and just a few months before our trek, Dasonam’s son in law died in one of the high camps on Everest. Dasonam was eager to secure a safer future for him and his family, especially now that he was responsible for raising his grand daughter, Ngawang (pictured at the top). Dasonam wanted to start his own trekking guide operation, and we were his first clients.

Dasonam put together a fabulous trip that exposed us to cultural subtleties we never would have been able to see on our own. Dasonam and his three sons, age 16, 20, and 23, worked seamlessly to guide us around Kathmandu and get us up to Lukla where our trek began. We spent two weeks on an amazing circuit, but the highlight was visiting Dasonam’s home village of Pangboche, where we met four generations of his family, including his brother who is the head of the village monastery. We returned from the trip after a fantastic adventure, and all of us had a new, deeper appreciation of the Nepalese culture and how those in other parts of the world live.

We all were attempting to assist Dasonam in getting his trekking company (Khumbutrek.com) up and running when the earthquake disaster struck.

Dasonam, his wife, granddaughter, and 93 year-old mother are now living in tents at 13,000 feet while they try to rebuild their home. Dasonam estimates about $5000 will be required to rebuild with better construction standards to withstand another earthquake. Our target for fundraising is $6000, because Dasonam also wants to fund repairs on the village school. It was not as badly damaged as most homes in the area because it was more recently built with stronger materials, but some windows were broken and the school bathroom collapsed.

While we would like to help as many people as possible, this seemed like the best place to start. We wanted to focus on just one family because of our relationship and also because they are influential people in their village who can continue helping others as soon as their basic needs are secure. All money raised will be wired straight over to Dasonam Sherpa.

We decided to use Gofundme to raise money for Dasonom Sherpa and his family.

GoFundMe is a crowd-funding platform that allows users to raise money for a wide variety of causes. Founded in 2010 and based out of San Diego, CA, GoFundMe has been featured on CNN, Forbes, New York Times, and TIME, and has an A rating with the Better Business Bureau, based on just one complaint in three years.

Please consider a donation of any size. It will be most appreciated by those in dire need.
