I’m Kate Salazar, here to ask for your support for our steel drum music programs.
Inspired by our experiences performing in Trinidad & Tobago’s 120-piece steel bands, my husband John and I, along with our good friend Michael Skweir, dreamed of recreating the spirit and camaraderie of the Caribbean ‘panyard’ here on the North Coast.
In 1999, we founded the Pan Arts Network and began offering steel drum classes to the community. (Mike has since left the area: we hope he comes back to us soon!) We work with local schools, holding workshops for students ranging from 3rd grade through high school. We welcome adults who are just beginning their musical journeys, and challenge our advanced players through the sweet sounds of the Pan Dulce Steel Orchestra.
Creating community through music has always been at the heart of our organization. Our band members help teach new players, support our programs through fundraising efforts, volunteer their time to perform in the community, and keep the music flowing in countless other ways.
In order to keep costs affordable for our students, we have never charged a fee for the use of the instruments. Our drums are played so much, by so many, that without regular maintenance, they start sounding pretty ragged.
We are working to raise $6000 to cover the cost of hiring a steel drum tuner from out of the area (this specialized service is not available locally). An additional $9000 to purchase more instruments will allow us to expand our school programs, as these workshops are filled to capacity.
It has been a great pleasure to watch budding new pan players experience the joy of making music, often for the first time. Your donation will keep this unique art form flourishing in our community!
We welcome any amount that you can contribute.
Thank you for supporting Pan Arts on the North Coast!
