Deanna’s medical fundraiser

UPDATE 6: The president / CEO of AXA have stepped up for our family and are medically evacuating my parents and bringing them HOME. Thank you to everyone who has helped share this for us and get their story heard- we could not have done it with you!
UPDATE 5: Insurance has given them 72 hours to pay $80,000 for the medical flight home or they are cutting them off of insurance and leaving them in the Dominican. UPDATE 4: The surgeon in the Dominican is pushing for a 3rd surgery to clean up from the 2nd surgery. We have spoken with the embassy and the consulate who have both said that they can’t get emergency funding to have Deanna flown back via air ambulance. After insurance coverage there is a $65,000 bill to have her medically evacuated and brought back into the Canadian Health care System.
UPDATE 3: My mom has had the second surgery and is back in her room recovering. The surgeon is confident in what he did and this should be the last of the surgeries pending no more post op complications. My dad is waiting to hear from the insurance company if they are still recommending medical evacuation or if they will let them stay there until she can fly on a commercial flight home.
UPDATE 2: She is going in for another surgery. Her CT scan shows that her lower bowels shifted after the first surgery and the surgeon told them that is what is causing her post op pain and the fluid in her lungs.
they are going to go back in through a portion of her first surgical incision and correct this issue in hopes that she will be able to fly WITHOUT medical transport within a week of the surgery.
UPDATE: The insurance company has made the recommendation that my mom is medically evacuated from the Dominican and either transfer her to a hospital in the US or back home in Canada. My dad Paul is currently working with the insurance company to see how much of this we can get covered but the costs are looking upwards of $75,000 - $85,000.
Thank you to everyone who has helped so far, we truly appreciate everything you have all done for us.

Hi, my name is Brianna and I’m starting this fundraiser for my mom and dad. My mom and dad had left for their 2 week vacation to the Dominican Republic on Monday April 24, 2023 and on April 28, 2023 I received a call from my dad letting me know that my mom was rushed to the hospital in the Dominican Republic and was unsure of what was going on. After many hours of waiting we were told that she had an ulcer that ruptured and perforated her stomach. By the time she came out of a very emergent surgery, she had her appendix, spleen and 12% of her stomach removed due to the ulcer. She was placed in a medically induced coma to let her body rest due to the damage the ruptured ulcer has done to her body. She has since been awake and slowly healing, but it has been an uphill battle ever since. It has been a week since the surgery and she is still in the ICU in the Dominican and is currently battling an infection at the surgical site and fluid in her lungs. Insurance, the surgeons they have in Canada and the Untied States going over her paperwork plus her surgeon in the Dominican have all said it is to dangerous for her to fly home due to the condition her body is in post op. Thankfully, they do have insurance but not everything has been covered 100% for them and unfortunately the bills here don’t just disappear. They were due home Monday, May 8th, 2023, but due to the fluid build up in her lungs and infection at the surgical site, they are keeping her admitted in the ICU for another week hoping they can get everything under control without needing another surgery- which will keep her there even longer if that happens. It has been incredibly hard and stressful for everyone involved as there is so little we can do here for them, and they are doing the best they can under the set of circumstances they’ve been given.
I would like to raise some money for them so when they do finally make it home, they have the funds to pay the bills that have been incurred due to her medical emergency as well their monthly bills here at home because my mom will be unable to work for a while even once she is back and my dad will not be at work when he was scheduled to be back because he is taking care of her while she is in hospital.
Thank you for reading and any help you’re able to give.
