On Thursday the 15th of December 2016, Leanne who is only 54, got the news that no one ever expects, her recent test results had come back abnormal, she heard the word that everyone dreads to hear, Cancer. Leanne was diagnosed with Endometrial Cancer, a form of Uterine Cancer which affects the lining of the uterus. The Doctor was positive and discussed the different stages and was hopeful that the Cancer was early stage, he sent Leanne off to a multitude of tests including CT and MRI’s.
The anxious wait was on, on the 22/12/16 it was time to go back to the specialist for the results of the MRI, it wasn’t great news, the Cancer was graded as IIIC, the tumour had spread to the Lymph Nodes. The Doctor booked Leanne in for a biopsy to determine the type of tumour, this was completed on the 28/12/16, the wait was on again while Doctors and Specialists were away on their Christmas holidays.
After a very long two and a half week wait it was time to go back to the specialist for what Leanne hoped would be good news, unfortunately the Specialist told her that she has a Carcinosarcoma, a rare and very aggressive tumour. More bad news was definitely not what Leanne needed, but she remained positive, strong and determined to beat the Cancer.
The whole process has been extremely overwhelming and not as straight forward as it seems, her symptoms were minimal and it took numerous GP visits, Specialist appointments, MRI’s, CT scans, Ultrasounds and Hospital over a time which is meant to be filled with joy and celebration.
Leanne is a very strong and fun loving individual, with two grown daughters, Richelle and Dannielle who will be by her side for every single moment of this journey. Nothing can change the prognosis of the tumour, however we can ease the financial burden for Leanne as she is about to start vigorous treatment which will consist of Radiation five days a week and Chemotherapy once a week, meaning that she will not be able to work.
Leanne is a very humble and private person and getting her permission to share her story was tough, however after hours of convincing she finally agreed on the condition that a portion of any raised funds go to the prevention and awareness of Endometrial and Uterine Cancers.
If you are in the position to help, her family will be eternally grateful, if you are not able to help financially your prayers and thoughts will mean just as much, as will getting the word out there about Endometrial and Uterine Cancers. In 2016, 2652 women in Australia were diagnosed with Uterine Cancer, making it the 6th most common type of Cancer in Females, having affected 1 in every 45 women by the age of 85.
Much Love,
