Eyá lé mitákuyepi,Wašíčuiya Mateja Sitting Crow emáčiyapi naháŋ Lakȟól mičháže kiŋ Ho Zan Win emáčiyape kštó. Hello, my name is Mateja Sitting Crow and my Lakota name is Ho Zan Win, Strong Voice Woman. I am a 16 year old junior at Red Cloud Indian School on the Pine Ridge Indian Reservation. Unbeknownst to me, a mentor at my school had nominated me for the National Student Leadership Conference and the opportunity to attend a summer program at an Ivy League University of my choosing. I chose to attend Yale University for the Law and Advocacy program from June 24-July 2, 2019. My decision for this specific program is because I want to find new ways to make an impact. I have been able to help make a difference using my knowledge I currently have and I fully intend to continue down this path to help my people the best I can. I look around and see how corrupt and unfair things can be on the reservation and I cannot help but want to fix things and make a better home for our current and future generations. In order to attend this program, I am responsible for tuition, spending money for the day trips and transportation costs, which add up to a total of $7,000 (including flights, trains, taxis, and baggage). So far with the help of my mom, I have been able to raise $2,000 with donations from a local leadership program I previously attended and fundraising I’ve been doing.

With this program I will:

Earn college credits from the American University. This will help me to get a head start on my future.

Receive recommendation letters from Yale professors to use in future college applications. This will help my chances of getting into a college of my choosing.

Be in the running for a $20,000 Alumni College scholarship to an Ivy League school for attending my high school junior year.

Receive a certificate of completion to attach to college applications evidencing my hard work and dedication I put into my future.

Having this chance to step foot on Yale University grounds is a chance I may never get again and opportunities like this do not come around very often.  I have so many hopes and dreams for my future that I would like to do all I can to help prepare myself for making a difference. I thank you so much for helping me to accomplish one of my goals.
