The "Terry Fox" Connection
You’re not alone if you’ve never heard of it … I hadn’t either until I was shockingly told that this was the bump in my right pelvis that I thought was maybe an overextension of my hip from too much stretching!
In a nutshell, Chondrosarcoma is a primary bone cancer that accounts for 0.2% of all cancers and one of the most difficult bone tumors to diagnose and treat. And to top it off, patients with a pelvic chondrosarcoma have a poorer prognosis than those with it in other extremities due to the proximity to vital organs and structural sustainability. That said, I needed a miracle worker in my corner if I had any hope of making it through this.
Enter Dr. Jay Wunder, Surgeon-in-Chief for Sinai Health System. Look him up, his titles, seats and awards are WAY TOO MANY to put here! He took my case immediately and I am forever grateful!

I’ll be transparent, my situation was dire … the tumor had lodged itself very comfortably inside my right pelvis touching way too many vital organs, muscles and vein ways.
Dr. Wunder was INCREDIBLE! He never held back from disclosing the “bad”, yet confidently shared his success plan and I trusted him wholeheartedly. He always made time for me, his team of fellows and his administrative team held his same high values with regards to patient care, and I felt supported and heard every step of the way.
The operation was held 3.5mths afterwards since there were a lot of Specialists that would have to be a part of the surgery under Dr. Wunder’s leadership. I prepped those 3.5mths as best as I could because I promised him I was going to be his “best patient ever”! It makes me laugh now because he’s probably heard that from so many other patients, but he amused me and warmly smiled every time I said it :)
All in all, what was planned on being a 2 part, 24hr + operation, resulted in a 14hr one with a much better outcome than any of us expected. Dr. Wunder and his team brainstormed on the fly and got the tumor out, margins and all!
I still have a long way to recover fully, but for someone missing a good chunk of her pelvis and basically has a hollow hole in her hip …. I’m feeling pretty awesome on the daily that I can walk and hold myself up independently with everyday getting better. It helps that Dr. Wunder is proud of me too .... positive reinforcement really is my love language LOL.
“The grass is always GREENER where you water it” and I “water" with graditude and self-care everyday. It’s a struggle; it’s hard; it hurts …. but there’s no choice. I push ahead everyday because the future is looking pretty bright and I would never want to waste the miracle Dr. Wunder performed on me! You really don't take a minute for granted after something like this :)
I hope you use your WUNDER mask in Good Health and feel the LOVE that was infused in each stitch. All are made with 3 layers of 100% quilting cotton, internal pocket for a removable filter, padded wire around nose area and ties with 4mm paracord around the back of the head. Holds up great to daily washing and very comfortable to wear. No pulling behind the ears and sits snug around the face.
