Wujal Wujal flooding fundraiser

Hi, my name is Matt Nicholls and I'm the editor of the Cape York Weekly newspaper.

Far North Queensland has just been devastated by flooding after record rainfall in the space of several days.

Wujal Wujal is a community particularly close to my heart. It's located on the edge of the Daintree Rainforest and sits in a valley alongside the Bloomfield River.

The community is getting evacuated to Cooktown. Funds raised will be sent to Wujal Wujal Aboriginal Shire Council to best spend on helping its citizens. There is talk of a community bus to transport residents, especially now that most cars in Wujal Wujal have been destroyed.

Any funds raised above the tally will go to the neighbouring Cook Shire Council to support those in places like Ayton and Rossville, which have also been hit hard by flooding.

Funds will be transferred directly to the Wujal Wujal Aboriginal Shire Council.
