Hello friends! Meet Gleb, 6-year-old son of parents Dasha and Dennis. They live in Brest, Belarus and have 3 children - Gleb, Kleem, and Olivia, Gleb being the oldest of the 3. At 19-weeks, the poor parents were pressured to perform an abortion, given that there son showed signs of being born with severe neurologic deficits. Doctors predicted he wouldn't even survive more than 24-hours after birth! Parents were of course worried for the little one, but refused to perform the abortion.
At 37- weeks gestation, the babies heartbeat could not be detected and doctors sent Dasha (mom) to the hospital for labor induction. Gleb was born, and he did not cry at birth. Doctors gathered to discuss his prognosis and determined that he would not make it even 24-hours. They officially diagnosed him with Down Syndrome. During their rounds, one of the doctors turned to Dasha (mom) and said, "Why didn't you abort him when you had the chance?!" Dasha replied, "It's my son, how could I kill him when I felt him move and heard his heartbeat?" To this, the doctor sarcastically answered, "Well congratulations! Now you have a son with Down Syndrome!"
Little Gleb was born with a plethora of health problems. He had pneumonia, requiring intubation and antibiotics. He was born with hemmorhages in both eyes, putting him at risk for blindness and deafness. He was born with a straight gut, meaning he had no anus and was not able to poop. Doctors also suspected he had hydrocephalus, a condition where too much fluid gathers in the head and causing head swelling. Lastly, he had a heart defect. The parents spent 2 excruciatingly long months in the hospital.
The day after he was born, he had surgery to create a colostomy, which would allow him to poop through a hole in his stomach into a little bag. Gleb lived with this colostomy for a year. During this year, the family searched for a doctor who could perform anal reconstruction on the little boy. Doctors in Belarus were not able to perform the surgery so the family traveled to Germany for another consultation, and here, the doctors were able to successfully perform anal construction, reversing his colostomy, and allowing him to poop normally.
From here on out, Gleb continued to develop, although all his developmental milestones were delayed. He was able to learn how to walk and do normal childhood activities until about 4-years-old when he developed Legg-Calve-Perthes disease, which is when there is a lack of blood flow to the tip of your thighbone and basically, the top of the thigh-bone joint starts to die off. The family again started to pursue treatment options. At the first consultation in Minsk, Belarus, the doctor said Gleb needed to rest and avoid walking to allow the hip joint to rest and heal. At a second consultation, the doctor said Gleb needed surgery ASAP but would have a very poor prognosis, require blood transfusion and he gave no guarantee of recovery.
In January of 2019, Gleb's family went to an orthopedic clinic in Germany. Here, the doctor said that the joint is now in the process of healing but growing in the wrong direction. The doctor recommended that Gleb get a 3-step surgery to reconstruct the femur joint and guide its growth in the right direction with screws, rods, and casting. Initially, the hospital said the surgery would cost 12,000 euros (approximately $13,500). Just this last week, another doctor looked over the case and stated that the surgery would actually cost 20,000 euros (approximately $22,500) due to the complexity of Gleb's case.
Now we ask you friends, to help this family out who have been through so much! The medical care provided in Belarus is far from the medical care offered in the United States. Clinic in Germany is very expensive and the family does not have sufficient funds for the surgery. If it lies on your heart, please donate to this family and help their little boy walk again. Они официально диагностировали Синдром Дауна. Один из врачей прокомментировал: “Почему Вы не сделали аборт, когда была такая возможность?” На что Даша ответила: “Это мой сын. Как я могла его убить, когда чувствовала его шевеления внутри и слышала, как бьется его сердечко?” “Ну что ж, поздравляю! Теперь у вас сын – Даун!”

Все это время родители пытались найти врача, которой мог бы сделать полноценную операцию, чтобы их ребенок смог какать как все дети. В Беларуси такие операции невозможны, поэтому семья обратилась за помощью к немецким специалистам. В Германии Глебу смогли помочь – там ему успешно сделали операцию на прямую кишку и исправили этот дефект.
Несмотря ни на что, Глеб развивался и рос как все дети, и родители делали для этого все возможное. Когда ему исполнилось 4 года, ему диагностировали Болезнь Пётреса (это заболевание тазобедренного сустава, при которой тазобедренная кость не попадает в тазобедренный сустав). На консультации в Минске (Беларусь) врачи запретили мальчику ходить. Позже, они назначили ему срочную операцию, которая требовала переливание крови, не дав при этом никаких гарантий на восстановление.
В январе 2019, семья Глеба снова обратились в клинику Германии. Немецкие врачи порекомендовали мальчику провести операцию в три этапа, дав гарантию на полное восстановление сустава. Глеб снова сможет ходить после этой операции. Изначально счет был выставлен на сумму 12,000 евро (13,500$). Позже, врачи пересмотрели историю болезни Глеба, и выставили новый счет в 20,000 евро (22,500$).
Мы просим вас не остаться равнодушными к этой семье, которая уже пережила так много. Уровень медицины в Беларуси очень далек от той медицины, к которой мы привыкли в Соединенных Штатах.
