Meet Colby, my sweet, motorcycle-loving nephew. His mother and father are Ashley and Joshua and he has an older sister named Charlie. About a month ago he started throwing up for no reason and would be fine the rest of the day, his mother took him to the doctor and found out that his head had grown 3 cm in 5 months the pediatrician recommended an MRI of his brain to make sure everything was okay. Colby was sedated and had his MRI on May 12th, later that day the doctors called Ashley & Joshua to let them know that Colby has a mass on his brain and fluid build-up and to bring him back to the ER at Tallahassee Memorial Hospital. The doctors there put Colby on monitors to monitor his brain activity because they were worried about the amount of fluid that was in his brain. The tumor was also making it to where the fluid could not move around as it should. It was also decided that he should continue his care at the University of Florida Shands Hospital in Gainsville Florida. Colby and Ashley were able to go on their first helicopter ride from Tallahassee to Gainsville that night while Joshua and some other family members drove to meet them there. May 13th at 8:49 AM he was sent back to surgery to remove what they could of the tumor and to drain some of the fluid in his brain. He did wonderful during surgery but did have to have one blood transfusion. The surgery lasted until 6:15ish that night. After surgery, the doctors were able to let us know that Colby's tumor was an embryonal tumor which is cancerous. The tumor was located on his brain stem near his cranial nerve. At this point we are not sure which subcategory the tumor will fall into meaning we are not sure of the type of cancer that it is. They believe that they were able to remove about 98%-99% of the tumor but will know more today once they do the spinal & brain MRI. He also will have a tube in his head to drain the fluid as necessary. Please keep my sister's family in your prayers.
