Fighting to Stay in Oakland

Donation protected
Help Mustafa raise $3600 to pay for a new place in Oakland!

Our friend and community activist Mustafa Solomon has been fighting eviction from his North Oakland home for the past five years. Following a small fire after 15 years in his apartment, Mustafa’s land lord pressured him and his daughter out to renovate the apartment with no relocation funds provided, forcing them to a rental in Vallejo that drained their resources. After the repairs, the land lord sold the building to a new land lord, and within four days of the sale, began evicting Mustafa.

Help Mustafa and his daughter raise $3600 for first month rent, last month rent and security deposit for a 2-bedroom apartment in Oakland!

Fighting gentrification is about supporting people through it

As a member of the North Oakland community for 35 years, Mustafa has dug deep roots in his neighborhood. Folks in the community spot him on his daily dog walk and while he's doing community outreach for the North Oakland Restorative Justice Council. Mustafa’s passion for photography bridges his personal interests with his politics. Today you can find him filming or photographing #BlackLivesMatter events. Just as often, he’s out photographing his favorite jazz and blues artists. In the past he’s photographed musicians including Miles Davis, George Clinton and the Parliament Funkadelic, Tina Turner, Donald Harrison, the Heath Brothers, and many more.

Mustafa has been fighting his eviction however he can -- he appealed it with the courts, held a speakout in front of his home with other tenants, and put up signs in his windows to broadcast it all over the neighborhood. He’s shown up for other tenants too by working with Causa Justa:Just Cause as a tenant organizer, fighting racism and gentrification in the place he calls home.

Consistent community support and action are what’s needed to prevent the further displacement of black and brown folks in Oakland, where the black population has dropped from 43% to 26% between 1990 and 2011. With diminished rent control in Oakland and an eviction on his record, finding affordable housing will be an uphill battle. Your support can help Mustafa keep his roots in the Bay.
