Hi friends and family of Jess and Rick,
As most of you likely know, Jessica and Rick lost their daughter, Parker, on October 30.
I imagine you all feel as we do, struggling to find a way to help Rick and Jess during this time. We decided to gather as many friends and family as we could to gift a City Park tree in Parkers’ memory as a special memorial for Jess, Rick and Rhodes to visit. Everything over the $1000 tree dedication donation will be gifted in Parker’s name to research focused on Necrotizing enterocolitis, or NEC, a serious disease that affects the intestines of premature infants. Jessica and Rick have decided to honor Parker’s memory by raising money for research dedicated to solving and curing NEC. From NECsociety.org:
Necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) is an intestinal disease that primarily affects premature and medically fragile infants. NEC causes an inflammatory process that can lead to intestinal tissue damage and death.
Despite significant advances in neonatal care, the morbidity and mortality rates associated with this disease have not significantly improved in decades. In the U.S. alone, thousands of babies develop NEC each year and hundreds of babies die from this complex intestinal condition. Once diagnosed, many babies only liv. e for a few hours or days, and survivors can have lifelong neurological and nutritional complications.
According to the C.D.C., NEC is a leading cause of overall infant mortality in the United States. Research is still needed to fully understand why NEC occurs, when NEC occurs, how NEC occurs, and which neonates will develop the disease.
