Help with dad's medical bills

My dad noticed a lump on his neck in January, and went to his PCP. He was then referred to a specialist at UAB after a fine needle aspirate came back inconclusive, but a CT and MRI showed masses in his parotid gland.

The surgeon decided that due to its rapid growth and it affecting his facial nerves, they would do surgery. During the surgery, they would see how entangled the tumors had become with the nerve, remove the tumors, how much they would have to work to repair the nerve as well as remove the lymph nodes on that side of his neck.

Five hours later, the surgery was a success and the tumors and lymph nodes were removed with some weakness to the nerve. They also took a biopsy of the tumors to see what kind of cancer it was.

We went back to the doctor two weeks later so the doctor could see how he was recovering, as well as give the results of the biopsy. While the cancer - basal cell carcinoma - he has is not at all uncommon, the fact that he had had no history of it on his head/face/neck and that it was found on his parotid gland is extremely rare, less than 1%.

Because of the rarity, the doctor wants to ensure the cancer doesn't come back and wants him to do proton radiation therapy. He also wants him to meet with a dermatologist and geneticist.

The out-of-pocket costs so far has amounted to around $1500. Soon, more bills will start pouring in as he meets with the dermatologist, geneticist, and starts the radiation treatments, which can range from five sessions to 39. Plus, we have the cost of gas from driving a total of three hours back and forth from our home to Birmingham.
