Nessa Meyers Recovery

On Sunday, March 1st Nessa was skating along at roller derby practice when she felt tingling and then numbness on her left side. She tried to sit down to avoid a big fall. When she didn’t get up right away, her teammates rushed to her side. Believing she hit her head they immediately called an ambulance. After a quick assessment it was obvious that she was displaying signs of a stroke.  She was immediately taken to UCSD Hillcrest hospital where she had many tests. A few days later she was moved to Sharp Memorial Hospital. Over the first week there were many ups and downs while trying to control the swelling and bleeding in her brain but Nessa fought on. Being only 37, a stroke is quite uncommon and the doctors do not know what caused it.

Nessa Meyers is one of the strongest, bravest and most stubborn people I know. That’s how I know she’s going to recover fully but, this will be a VERY long road. She will have extensive physical, occupational, and speech therapy. When she finally gets home she will need 24 hour a day care and will be out of work for quite some time. The doctors say it takes about a year to recover completely.

By her side throughout all of this, of course, has been her wife Virginia. Sleeping in chairs by her bedside and making sure Nessa isn’t giving the doctors and nurses too hard of a time. She is putting up with all of Nessa‘s stubbornness like a champ!

These two are at the beginning of a very long road and a new way of life. The financial burden that this will place on them will be staggering. If you can help them out at all it would be wonderful.
