Bonnie's Dream Scholarship Fund

Hello!

My goal is to raise $1,000 for a scholarship to be awarded to a college-bound, Leland and Gray Union High School senior, on or before Friday, June 19th. If there is a tie, I will award $500 to both recipients. If I raise over $1000, I will either split it between the two or award the entire total to one recipient, depending on how competitive the applicant pool is.

Criteria:

-Must be a graduating senior from Leland and Gray with involvement in at least 2 extra curricular activities.
-Must have been an honor student for at least 2 consecutive semesters in their high-school career.

Requirements:

-At least a 500-word essay on the biggest struggle in your life and how you conquered it. Include what your career passion is and how this award will help you get started on your way to achieving it.
-One teacher’s letter of recommendation.

Please email all submissions to [email redacted] on or before Friday, June 19th at 8pm.

I created this scholarship fund specifically to help a Leland and Gray college-bound senior with big-city, artistic/business/entrepreneurial/scientific/mathematic/educational dreams be able to receive some extra support on his/her journey into higher education. I understand how it feels to grow up in a rural area with a hunger for success. I dreamed of moving to New York City to become a model since I was 15, and when I was 23 I made that dream come true with persistence, intention, positive thinking and hard work. I now enjoy a successful modeling/real estate career and want to help Leland and Gray’s next future star emerge, whether he/she is an actor, singer, model, producer, writer, director, inventor, mathematician, scientist, videographer or the next Donald Trump or Bill Gates.

This scholarship is called “Bonnie’s Dream” because my mother, Bonnie, was a dreamer. She dreamed of becoming a fashion designer in New York, the author of childrens' novels, a poet and a painter. She accomplished many beautiful works of art in her lifetime, including creating her own couture wedding gown, authoring a children's book about her beloved dog, Heifer, and creating many poems and acrylic paintings. While she had raw talent and several artistic masterpieces in their own regard, she was never able to make a living out of her artistic dreams due to limited resources and a crippling addiction, so I want to help someone from my hometown community get a head start in her honor.

My mother, Bonnie, was a loving, artistic, lively woman until alcoholism took her life at the young age of 45, leaving behind my brother, Mitch, and I, both Leland and Gray graduates. When she passed, it was five days before my 14th birthday, and I felt numb for a few years thereafter. I channeled this loss into focused energy, becoming part of many extra curricular activities, including Student Council President, Big Brother Big Sister, the Leland and Gray Players, Marching Band, Jazz Band, Acapella, the Rotary Club and Soccer. Additionally, I applied for and received a grant through the Freeman Foundation, which enabled me to travel to China with the Journey East program for a month, and also received a Janeway Scholarship through the School for International Training to travel to Ghana, West Africa for 5 weeks my junior year. The Windham County/Leland and Gray community offered me an abundance of resources to help me become the success I am today, and now I want to give back to my community.

When I graduated Leland and Gray, I was the student Key Note speaker, which was a huge honor, and received many scholarships that day, which made my transition to Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts (MCLA) much smoother than I ever expected. I went on to graduate Summa Cum Laude from MCLA in 2010, and now live in New York City, where I live my dream, working as a professional model and real estate agent.

I want this scholarship to go toward educational expenses, whether they’re college tuition, books, those pesky, extra-long, college twin-bed-sized sheets, or a laptop. This scholarship is meant to ease the transition from high-school life to college life for one or more Leland and Gray graduating seniors. I want the hardworking, impactful, responsible, college-bound senior/s who receive/s this scholarship to use it as evidence that it’s OK to lean in and ask for help.

Good luck!

All my best,

Myles Ellison
