We are the Rodgers family; Barbara, Laura, Niamh and Helen.
Tony, our husband and father was diagnosed with Mesothelioma; a cancer caused by exposure to asbestos in July 2017 just after he turned 60 years of age.
He was a non-smoker, lifelong non-drinker and
to date, we have no idea when or where he was
exposed to asbestos, working as a social worker
all his life.
Tony passed away at home on 1st January 2022 with his four girls; his wife and three daughters, beside him after an incredibly brave fight with this horrific and entirely preventable cancer.
We miss him more than words could ever say.
He was a lot of great things; a renowned labrador trainer and an incredible social worker in NI but most of all he was a true, loving, family man. He was the sensible, level-headed man we always turned to for advice.
He was the problem solver, peace maker and comedian of our house and we are heartbroken without him.
We are so incredibly proud of Tony and how bravely he endured his illness; a hero in it's finest form.
Given the chance, he would do everything in his power to help others.
As a family we are working alongside Mesothelioma UK who have been trying for several years to get a foothold in Northern Ireland. With our support they have established Project Meso NI.
Our hope is to raise awareness of this aggressive malignancy and improve support and services offered to patients in Northern Ireland including access to specialist treatment and clinical trials, and establishing a pathway for referral to NHS colleagues in mainland UK as appropriate.
We are so grateful for your kindness and support moving forward.
