Brandon Tieuel is a dedicated leader and passionate advocate for justice, but right now, he needs our support to continue his important work. Brandon is the founder of the National Justice Society (NJS), an organization committed to reducing recidivism by rehumanizing the incarcerated population and advocating for change within the criminal justice system. He’s also a co-founder of the National Lawyers Guild (NLG), working to ensure justice is served for those marginalized by the system.

Unfortunately, Brandon is currently facing a legal challenge that could take him away from his important work and the people he serves. Brandon was initially given the green light after requesting permission from his probation officer (PO) to attend the Jailhouse Lawyer Initiative’s (JLI) Flashlights Conference at NYU Law School in October. However, when the time came, a temporary officer was assigned to his case and, despite prior unofficial approval, informed him that he could not attend due to unpaid fees. Brandon, relying on what he thought was the previous officer’s affirmation, decided to attend the conference.

Brandon was a dedicated and founding member of the JLI during his incarceration and is now our honored movement partner. While at the conference, Brandon received a notice that he was in violation of his parole for attending without permission. In a subsequent interaction with his probation officer, the officer was dismissive and confused, questioning why Brandon was even participating on the panel. Despite this, Brandon had complete documentation, including proof of the conference, panel participation, and prior communication with his officer. Brandon was invited to the conference to speak as a panelist, given his extensive experience and expertise. Unfortunately, this misunderstanding has escalated, and the court now demands that he follow through with a bench warrant and turn himself in.

Brandon’s attorney, provided through our network, has attempted to resolve the issue through the courts to avoid Brandon turning himself in, but the court refuses to offer a bond. As a result, Brandon will be forced to sit in detention and wait for his next court date. This is a huge setback, not only for Brandon but for the National Justice Society and the many individuals who rely on his advocacy.

How You Can Help:
We are asking for your support to help Brandon raise the $3,000 needed to secure his release and allow him to continue his critical work with the National Justice Society. This money will go toward the following:

  • Outstanding parole fees
  • Outstanding secondary education fees
  • Hygiene, stationary, and other personal items (for the inside while he waits on his hearing date)

Brandon’s commitment to justice, empowerment, and social change has made a tangible impact in his community and beyond. He has spent years building an organization that helps formerly incarcerated individuals reintegrate into society and advocates for systemic reform. His work has been vital in promoting prisoner rehabilitation, providing platforms for storytelling, and fighting against injustice.

By contributing to this campaign, you’re not only helping Brandon navigate this massive injustice but also supporting the continued growth of an organization working to create real change. You’re telling the prison industrial complex that they can no longer mess with our community members and leaders! We’re asking for your help to ensure Brandon receives support and justice!

Please donate today and help us keep Brandon free to continue his essential work!

Thank you for your generosity and support,
The Jailhouse Lawyer Initiative
