Hello, this is RYD, a mental health organisation. We are raising funds to support vulnerable youth, especially secondary school students, in Uganda, through the healing power of expressive writing (journaling).
We are not broken, just unheard.
In Uganda, over 14 million people live with mental illness, many of them silently. For youth, refugees, and persons with disabilities, mental health isn't just stigmatised—it's ignored.
Imagine being 16, displaced by conflict, or battling depression in a classroom that has no words for what you feel. Therapy? It's a luxury. A private place to speak? Rare. A person who listens? Rarer still.
But what if healing could begin with a pen?
OUR MISSION
Write to Restore is a grassroots mental health project by RYD Mental Health, a youth-led Ugandan organisation. We believe healing starts when young people are given tools to express, release, and restore themselves—through journaling.
We are not trying to build big hospitals.
We are trying to place 1500+ personalized journals into the hands of
- students in underserved schools
- refugees in settlements
- young people with disabilities in rehabilitation centres
Each journal is more than paper. It's a voice. A listener. A safe space when no one else is.
WHY IT HELPS
Uganda has only 53 psychiatrists for a population of nearly 50 million. That's about 1 psychiatrist per million people, most in cities. Our rural youth and refugee communities are left behind.
But expressive writing is therapy. Studies have shown it reduces anxiety, depression, and emotional distress.
To fully run the project, we need funds; any contribution is welcome.
SUSTAINABLE IMPACT
We are training Journal Champions—young leaders who will continue journaling sessions beyond the project. They'll guide others, share their own healing journeys, and carry this ripple of hope into their communities.
