Kelly's Lyme Fund

I don't know where to start. My little sister,Kelly, has Lyme disease. She has for six years now. She's getting worse, a lot worse. Her doctor is at the point where he has no idea what to do for her anymore and she needs to see a Lyme specialist who can help her.

We live in GA. There were only 8 confirmed cases of Lyme here in 2013. That's the latest year the CDC has on Lyme statistics in GA. I don't want to bore you with numbers but as you can imagine with only 8 cases it's not very prevalent here and that makes finding someone who specializes in Lyme extremely hard to find in GA. So we have had to look outside of GA. We have been able to find a great doctor in New Hampshire that is not covered by insurance, none of them are. The IV therapy is very costly, but will hopefully save my sisters life. Let me tell you a little about my sister. She's 29 years old. She has two wonderful children. A 7 year old and a 3 year old. Her husband has a job where he is out of town probably 80% of the year. So that leaves her to take care of the kids, home, whatever by herself. Which is nearly impossible. Right now, she is in so much pain. She has trouble walking and sometimes can't even hold on to a coffee cup. Something you and I might take for granted. She has neuropathy. The medication she's taking for it makes her so nausated it requires another medication to combat that too. Her liver function are elevated and her joints are swollen. It has also affected her brain. She has what they like to call "brain fog". It's a nice name for doing things that don't make sense sometimes. Like putting the milk in the pantry and the keys in the fridge. Lyme disease looks like a lot of different diseases. My sister was told she had several things that really was the Lyme disease mimicking them. Like, parvo, cytomegalaviris, fibromyalgia and lupus. How can you treat one of these serious diseases, thinking it's the right diagnosis when really it's the Lyme disease causing all the problems from the beginning. My sister is so emotional right now. That's really an understatement, actually. She cries and she has every reason to. She thinks she's going to die. I would cry too. She's afraid that she's going to leave her children without a mother. She has had to give up her dream of becoming a nurse and quit school because her disease has taken over her.

I can't let her go through this alone. Our family is very close. In fact, a lot of people think it's weird how much time we spend with each other. My sister is my best friend. I don't know what I would do without her. And to watch her go through all of this pain and sadness is heart renching for me. As her big sister I have to try to help her in any way I can. I love her. I need her. Help her, please.
