My name is Sophie Mallon some of you may have seen my story on BBC2 program ‘Hospital’. I have been in hospital 15 months, I spent 12 in Intensive Care and I’ve now been on the ward for 3 months. Prior to this happening I was perfectly fit and well. It all began when I woke up with problems with my vision (I thought it was my contact lenses playing up) I was admitted to The Royal Liverpool hospital, which is where I had a CT scan of my brain which showed a small lesion which they thought was a brain tumour on my brainstem.
I was transferred to the Walton Centre, rapidly my symptoms became worse as I had inflammation on the brain and it had spread. Eventually I was diagnosed with ADEM (Acute Disseminating Encephalomyelitis). I lost the ability to swallow and cough, then I began struggling with my breathing, I had a seizure and went unconscious and was transferred to intensive care in an induced coma. My family were told that it was touch and go whilst I was in the coma and nobody knew what to expect. Then last April myself and my family were told there was a very high chance that I’d never walk/talk again (my vocal chords were completely paralysed as a result from the damage on my brainstem) and that I’d never live a normal life. Here I learnt to walk again, breathe on my own without a tracheostomy and talk. It’s been a long process but I am at the point of going to rehab, I still need to build the strength up so I can eat and drink. I have recently been denied funding for rehab which will be essential for me in getting home and back to normal life. I’ve started this page to see if I could raise the funds required for the intense rehabilitation I require for mental and physical needs, which will allow me to go home with independence . I am beyond grateful for everyone’s support so far on my journey, I will keep pushing to raise awareness for ADEM.

Every single donation is appreciated more than you know and I’m so grateful you’ve taken the time to read this.
Thank you
