Wrenleigh Harper is a beautiful blessing! Looking at that precious face, you wouldn’t know she is fighting big battles.
On January 7th, Madelyn received a call from Wrenleigh’s pediatrician. Her newborn screen came back abnormal. He made arrangements for us at St. Louis Children’s Hospital to begin testing. While there, she was seen by a team of residents, fellows, immunologists, rheumatologists, and cardiologists. Lab work, spinal tap, X-rays, echocardiograms, and genetic tests were done. Many of those were done in house and several were sent out to Mayo Clinic. On day #10 we were able to come home with some information while final results were still a week away.
On January 23, at 23 days old, Wrenleigh was diagnosed with DiGeorge Syndrome, also known as 22q11.2 deletion syndrome. This syndrome is when part of chromosome number 22 is missing, resulting in heart defects, cleft palate, learning and development problems, mental health problems, thymus gland disfunction, and autoimmune deficiencies.
On January 29, Wrenleigh was admitted to St. Louis Children’s Hospital for heart failure. In addition to the 2 known heart defects (right aortic arch and large VSD), the cardiologists discovered she has a rare anomaly called Hemitruncus. She will be having surgery to repair the VSD and Hemitruncus within the next two days. Recovery time will be 2-4 weeks inpatient at St. Louis Children’s Hospital. THIS IS HER BIGGEST BATTLE YET!
It is heartbreaking to see this beautiful baby of 7.5 pounds struggle to breathe, feed, and sleep. There are many long days ahead for her.
On Monday night (January 28) I prayed for God to put the doctors, nurses, and entire medical staff in place to take care of her. I felt we were in a place of uncertainty. As Madelyn and I walked into the ER of Children’s Hospital and the nurse took her into her arms and began to talk to us, I knew He had set His plan in motion.
Our first request is prayer for Wrenleigh, family, and the medical staff.
Madelyn will be staying with her following the surgery and during her recovery time at home. Her sick leave time is exhausted because of the pregnancy complications.
Wrenleigh has private health insurance with a high deductible ($6500). Medical, travel, and out of pocket costs continue to grow.
A big “thank you” to our SuperHeroes for your donations, prayers, and encouraging words.
