Her Story
Right at the beginning of 2021, at only 34 years old, Melissa was diagnosed with HER2+ invasive ductal breast cancer. Although her doctors said that this type of cancer is curable, it is also quite uncommon. That means her treatment i.e. chemotherapy will be aggressive. She will also likely have to undergo a mastectomy (breast removal) to get rid of the cancer for good.
Additionally, Melissa will need fertility preservation (hormone shots, ivf egg retrievals) prior to any cancer treatments. Because the aggressive chemotherapy can cause infertility and permanent hair loss, along with Melissa already having two miscarriages within the past couple of years, doctors had to recommend these additional procedures.
They say 1 in 8 women are at risk of breast cancer, while 1 in 4 pregnancies are at risk of miscarriage. Unfortunately, Melissa has been affected by both.
