Hey, I'm Marlayne; 38 years old mother of one and an ambulatory wheelchair user.
Due to a herniated disk from a botched epidural, and a luxated knee from an injury, I cannot stand or walk for too long. For short walks, I do use my cane, but if I need to walk for a long time, I need a wheelchair.
Thing is, not every place has a chair for wide hips / plus size people, and that makes it difficult to go places, or not slow everybody down in social events. That's why we thought of buying one.
My wife's insurance will cover part of it if I have a paper from a doctor. So I called the GAP, because I don't have a family doctor. ( I am on the waiting list though.
The person at GAP tells me that I need to see my physiotherapist, that my physiotherapist needs to fill a paper, then I can see a doctor who can fill the rest for the insurance.
Turns out my physio cannot do these things, but if I see a doctor.. they can point me towards the right place?
So that would mean seeing a doctor to find a physiotherapist that could fill the paper. See this physio and pay 1 time for them to check my knee, one time for them to check my back and then another time to fill the paper. Then I would need to see a doctor again and pay for them to fill the rest of the paper.
And all of that is IF both the doctor and physio can agree that I need one and not be fatphobic and tell me I just need to loose weight. The herniated disk was proven to be there with an MRI, where I got my botched epidural from the cerclage when I was pregnant with my daughter 9 years ago.
It makes many many hoops to jump through.. and more and more money added on top of things JUST to have the insurance pay for part of the fee for the chair.
Since I am a stay-at-home mom / freelance artist with not a lot of income, I turn towards a fundraiser for help.
The funds will be used for the purchase of the chair.
