I’ve taken a bit of time to gather my thoughts before sharing this.
As many of you know, my dad recently came to visit. During his stay, his health took a sudden and serious turn—he was hospitalized with a severe infection, dangerously high blood sugar levels, and an abscess in his liver. I spent all of April by his side, going in and out of hospitals and doing my best to take care of him.
Thankfully, he’s now somewhat stable, but his recovery is ongoing, long and requires regular hospital visits and constant medical care.
In order to manage his care, I had to make the difficult decision to fly home with him—straight from the hospital—on a 28-hour journey. It was the only way to ensure he received the care he needed without doubling the already overwhelming hospital expenses. Unfortunately, once we arrived, we had to admit him to the hospital again almost immediately.
We’ve since arranged for a 24/7 caregiver to help, which has been a huge relief. Still, the mounting medical bills have been overwhelming. I’ve received some support from family, for which I’m deeply grateful but it’s still not enough.
These past few months have been the most emotionally and physically exhausting of my life.
If you’re in a position to help —no matter how small— it would mean more than I can put into words. And if you’re able to share this with others, I’d be deeply thankful. My final hospital bill is $19504.35 a staggering amount.
Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, for your kindness, your support, and your prayers.
With love,
Queenie Hou
