We are Rita Rebetskaya and Polina Kaulio, two Calgary-based interdisciplinary artists - a director/choreographer and a visual designer - founders of MurMur Theatre https://www.murmurtheatre.com/ - creating an independent performance inspired by Georg Büchner’s Woyzeck.

Our project reimagines Woyzeck as a story told not through the soldier’s eyes, but through Maria’s - the woman who loves, sins, remembers, and resists. The world around her is no longer a poor town but a sterile, post-human laboratory where tenderness becomes an experiment and control replaces faith.

This work is deeply personal to us. We are drawn to questions of what remains human when everything - body, memory, desire — is monitored and measured. What happens when care becomes a form of surveillance? How does love survive in a place where touch itself feels dangerous?

The piece unfolds through visual storytelling, choreography, text, and stage design. It blends theatre, dance, and performance art - exploring the body as both archive and battleground. Maria becomes the emotional core of this world: a figure who refuses to disappear, whose humanity flickers in a landscape of white walls and electric light.

We are raising funds to bring this project to life - to support rehearsal space, scenography, lighting, sound, and fair compensation for the dancers, actors, and designers who have joined us on this journey. Every contribution goes directly toward building the physical and emotional world of Woyzeck: a space of fragility, resistance, and quiet rebellion.

This is a story about what it means to remain human inside a system that no longer believes in humanity.
