Wounded Hostage Needs Help

Monday, August 24, 2015, started out like any other work day for 58-year-old Don Davis. But it definitely didn’t end that way. An independent trucker, he was fully loaded, preparing to leave the remote logging site where he was working, when a man with a gun appeared out of nowhere, ordering him to get in the truck and drive. Don had no way of knowing the man had already shot his pregnant girlfriend and dumped her out of his vehicle during a high speed chase with law enforcement officials.
By the time the fugitive was apprehended, Don had been caught up in a shoot-out which left him with seven gunshot wounds. He was airlifted to a hospital where he had his first surgery the next day, after being stabilized, and a second two days later. A third surgery is scheduled in two months.
Although he’s home from the hospital now, Don will be receiving wound care every other day for an indefinite period of time. In addition to the injuries sustained elsewhere in his body his right hand was so badly mangled that doctors say it could be a year before they know if he’ll have use of it again.
Not only have Don and his wife, Kathy, lost their main source of income indefinitely, but now Kathy will be taking an extended leave of absence from her job to provide the 24-hour care Don needs until he can function on his own again. Meanwhile, in addition to their regular monthly expenses, they now have rapidly mounting medical bills.
This senseless tragedy has happened to a perfectly innocent man who has never hurt anyone in his life. These are good, honest, hardworking people. They’re strong people. Although what has happened to them might have caused others’ faith to falter, theirs has grown even stronger, thanking God every day that Don is still alive, closing texts, emails and posts with “God is good…ALWAYS.” They know this, because this is not their first tragedy.
Don and Kathy have raised three wonderful and successful children: Alicia, Amanda, and Brandon. Several years ago Alicia’s husband, Travis, was paralyzed in a diving accident, so they’ve experienced trauma before. They rallied around each other then as they have now, along with their extended family, their church family, and their many friends. They are a very close knit family. They rallied again when Don lost his father in April, and again when he lost an aunt three weeks ago.

There are always people who need help, and Don and Kathy are the kind of people who offer that help…not ask for it. That’s why I’m doing this on their behalf. Once the account is up and running it will be turned over to Kathy. She and Don will be able to withdraw the money as needed to pay medical expenses and make up for lost income. Yes, they have insurance, but one example of what has to come out of their pocket is the $110.00 they will owe every other day as long as wound care is being provided. This is in addition to what their insurance pays.
