Wortham Wildcats Odyssey of the Mind Team Trip

We are a team of seven 5th graders from Wortham Oaks Elementary in Judson ISD (San Antonio) who competed in Texas's Odyssey of the Mind state competition on April 9, 2022.

Our team has placed 2nd in its inaugural year and looking forward to placing once again at the WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP!!!

You ask, what exactly did you do!?!? Picture a 17. 5 gram (3/5 ounce) structure made of balsa wood holding and balancing a stack of weights while getting hit, twisted, or even broken apart. Each year a new problem requires an original structure to withstand a new test of strength as it holds weight until it breaks. It’s not uncommon for experienced teams to hold over 1,000 pounds. Yet, our first structure held a good 115 pounds, only to improve our final design to hold a maximum of 490 pounds!!

We have worked together for the past four months to perfect our solution. We won 1st place at the Central Texas Regional Odyssey of the Mind competition, placing 2nd in State Finals and today, we advanced to the World Finals. Please help make our trip to the Odyssey of the Mind World Finals competition at Iowa State University possible by donating to support our team. Monies donated will pay for any additional expenses incurred as well as help us sustain any future Odyssey of the Mind teams and competitions. The funds will be withdrawn by Ms. Nelly Marquez as the team treasurer, with all funds going to the reimbursement of these additional expenses. World Finals is May 25- 29, 2022.
