Whyalla students race hydrogen cars at the World Finals in Switzerland 2026

Five students from Whyalla, South Australia have done something extraordinary. Out of hundreds of teams across Australia, they qualified for the H2 Grand Prix World Finals 2026 - an international competition where teams design, build, and race 1:10 scale remote-control cars powered entirely by hydrogen fuel cells.

The World Finals are held in Switzerland from 28 June to 6 July 2026, and these students will be there representing Australia - and carrying Whyalla's name to the world stage.

Who are they?
They're secondary students from Sunrise Christian School and Samaritan College - two Whyalla schools that joined forces to compete in the H2 Grand Prix Pro, a STEM education program run by Horizon Educational. The competition teaches students real engineering and energy technology skills: they work with hydrogen fuel cells, electronics, aerodynamics, and race strategy - the same principles shaping the future of clean energy.

They've already competed locally, proved themselves with a dominant performance, and earned their place. Now they need the community behind them to get there.

Why does this matter?
Whyalla is a city whose future is deeply tied to the question of clean energy. These students aren't just racing toy cars - they are hands-on pioneers of the very technology that could define the region's next chapter. At a time when Whyalla's place in Australia's hydrogen story is being written, these five young people are already living it.
The H2 Grand Prix World Finals are also live-streamed globally. When these students race in Switzerland, Whyalla goes with them.

What does the money cover?
  • Return flights - 5 students + 5 adults
  • Accommodation in Switzerland (9 nights)
  • Equipment, parts & competition entry
  • Travel insurance, visas & transfers

Every single dollar goes directly toward getting these students to Switzerland and giving them the best possible shot at the podium. This trip cannot happen without community support - there is no school fund or government grant covering this.
