The Year 11 Girls Basketball Team from Cathays High School have been Welsh Champions for 3 years running. Now, they plan to win the World title at this year's World School Basketball Championships in November in Valencia, Spain. They are doing lots of different things to raise the money but your support is appreciated in making this a trip to remember forever.
This group of talented young athletes, many of whom come from BME backgrounds and disadvantaged communities, has demonstrated remarkable dedication, resilience, and commitment to the sport despite facing significant challenges.
Recognising their hard work and the barriers they have overcome, we have identified an incredible opportunity for them to compete together in an international tournament. This experience will not only provide them with high-level competition but also offer personal and social development, fostering confidence, leadership, and aspiration. The tournament will expose them to different cultures, broaden their horizons, and allow them to build international connections through sport.
For many of these students, opportunities like this are rare. Participation in this event would be a life-changing experience, helping to break down social and economic barriers while reinforcing the importance of teamwork, discipline, and perseverance. Basketball has already played a key role in promoting social cohesion within this group, and this tournament will further strengthen their sense of belonging, pride, and ambition.
Beyond this trip, we hope this experience will inspire more players to continue their basketball journey beyond school—joining local clubs, competing at higher levels, and potentially representing Wales at the national level one day. By providing them with this platform, we aim to open doors to further sporting opportunities that may otherwise be out of reach.
To make this opportunity accessible, we seek support in securing funding to ensure financial hardship does not prevent any player from participating. We firmly believe that no student should miss out due to economic disadvantage, and we are committed to making this an inclusive and empowering experience for all involved.
