Workplace Age Related Discrimination
Donation protected
Age discrimination in employment became illegal in the United States in 1967. In spite of this, corporations have consistently ignored the law in their hiring and firing practices.
Your contribution to this GoFundMe campaign supports our efforts to address work-place discrimination against the older workers by funding specific activities.
News reports over the past decade have highlighted systemic age discrimination at large corporations such as IBM and Google (see links at the end of this description for specific articles). In addition, companies like Verizon have been exposed for targeting job ads to people under 40 years old.
This campaign has been started by a group of professionals who were impacted by a Fortune 500 company’s deliberate targeting of older professionals. Since 2015, this group has been working to shine a light on this company’s practices, which we wish were unique, but sadly are commonplace in corporate America.
The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) is chartered to administer and enforce civil rights laws against workplace discrimination. Sadly, the EEOC has failed to address this group’s concerns in spite of delivering documentation of age discrimination. Corporations, with deep pockets and strong legal departments can play a “waiting game,” in the expectation that workers will run out of resources before the EEOC takes action.
That is exactly what has been happening in this case, and why we are starting this campaign.
We will use your contributions to this specific campaign to fund:
· Legal advice and representation as needed in service of our EEOC suit
· Public relations advice to undertake a PR strategy. Corporations may flout the law, but they hate bad publicity.
· The PR campaign itself to raise awareness in the court of public opinion and to rally other older workers who have been discriminated against.
We recognize that the world is in the midst of a pandemic and the US is in the midst of an awakening to discrimination, bias and systemic racism. We hope you can contribute to assist older Americans in their efforts to hold corporations accountable to the law.
