'working title' artist residency nadia berri

Donation protected
My name is Nadia Berri and I am a multidisciplinary artist living and working in London.

The project I am raising money for is ‘working title’, an artist residency curated by myself to be realised with OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder)/BDD (body dysmorphic disorder) patients at Seacole Ward, Springfield University Hospital, London (5 May to 28 July 2021).

Project Description

Over a period of three months (in a series of biweekly choreographed sessions in and around the hospital) the patients and I will be making and creating multidisciplinary artworks and situations through play, chance methods, intuitive response and improvisation.

The Artist Residency will culminate in an interactive and performative exhibition along with a public program (in the form of panel discussions and workshops) curated and run by the patients and myself in a London contemporary art space (15 to 19 September 2021). There, all the works and situations we will have created in the residency, come together and form a new whole and in the workshops we will engage with everything, add and activate using similar processes and methods as in the residency.

Backstory

In October 2020 I devised and delivered an art workshop to create a mural in collaboration with the OCD/BDD patients of Seacole Ward. I employed the approaches that are part of my artist and art-educational practice - play, chance methods, intuitive response and improvisation. Many of these are anathema to people with OCD/BDD, but in fact proved extremely helpful and revelatory. The way that we worked took them away from their OCD for a while and in addition to being thrilled with the result of their efforts, they also felt completely liberated and empowered by working in this unfamiliar way.

Indeed, the experience proved such a revelation for all involved, that we now want to develop a longer-term project along these same lines.

Dr. Ilenia Pampaloni's (Consultant Psychiatrist on Seacole Ward) supporting statement

'I am writing in support of Nadia’s further involvement on our ward. Her previous workshop had an exceptional feedback from service users.

The workshop not only provided a an artistic and creative therapeutic milieu for the service users to express their feelings, but also provided an opportunity to apply CBT with exposure and response prevention as it reinforced the need for the patients to produce something potentially imperfect, and to be able to deal with “dirt” and dealing with unclean material which is very important for their treatment and recovery.

I cannot recommend enough the further involvement of Nadia with our service .'

'working title' residency sessions with patients

1) Intro to residency for patients followed by 'Action Painting' - Seacole + gardens: automatic painting on 2 x 2 meter sheets each / translating into form our most inner emotions / guest artist Kit Massey (Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance ) will riff off of what he sees happening on the canvases and create musical improvisations.

2) 'Taking a Line for a Walk' - Hospital grounds + ward: drawing small scale without looking at the paper / scaling up drawings with projectors + collectively + make large scale backdrops for final exhibition

3) 'Exquisite Corpse' - ward: creating characters and their stories through the game of Exquisite Corpse - protagonists to the backdrop created the previous Wednesday

4) 'Found material' - gardens or ward: collectively making large scale installations and assemblages with discarded materials found around the hospital grounds / activate with recorded sounds of the area / with Kit Massey

5) Visit some contemporary art galleries - to inspire our own exhibition and also to respond through sound, spoken word, movement to exhibited works

6) 'Translations' - ward: what sound does the colour red make? What colour is my whistling? How do I dance the colour blue? What shape or form is ‘running’?

In this session we look at colour, objects, sounds and physical movement and translate those into one another / with Kit Massey

I’ve checked costs with a range of suppliers and have identified the appropriate costs for the quality and quantity of materials I require. I have used a suggested day rate as a basis for determining the artists’ fees rate based on guidance from a-n and Artists' Union England.

It is the patients on Seacole that will immediately benefit from this residency and your donations will make it possible for me to realise with them a project very close to our hearts.

The artist residency is the beginning of something that I would like do on a more permanent basis at Springfield Hospital and also something I want to  offer to other services such as other inpatient mental health settings, prisons, pupil referral units etc.

I will be producing and publish an evaluation report following the residency to reflect on the outcomes of the project.

Donations toward the project can be made until mid-April 2021

HUGE THANKS, your support means a lot!

Since, what will be produced in the artist residency and subsequently shown in the exhibition, has not yet been made, please have a look at some past projects I have undertaken with other groups and collaborators as well as my own. This is to give you an idea of what sort of works and situations will be created and in what media - sculpture, installation, spoken/written word, drawing, moving image, expanded painting, movement and sound. Should be wild! There will be between 6 and 12 patients/artists making work.
