Working Mother of 4 Needs a Lawyer

Donation protected
Ebony is the mother of four young children, Kayleana (11), Kayden (8), Amias (2) and Acari (1). As a single-income household, she is the sole provider for her and her children and has been working since the age of 16. She's my older sister, so I know firsthand her strength and resilience, as well as the incredible depth of her love. There is nothing she wouldn't do for her children, which is why the thought of her being forcefully separated from them breaks my heart.

On June 5th, my sister Ebony was charged with breaking and entering and accessory before the fact to the firing of a weapon at an occupied building. This means she was there, but was not the person who had the weapon. Under Virginia state law, she is now looking at a minimum of 20 years if the charges are not lowered, which is why we want to pay for her to hire an experienced attorney. We want Ebony to have fair and equal representation  under the law, to avoid her serving time for something she did not do or serving an unfairly extended sentence due to her status as a financially struggling black woman. Prior to this, the only offenses that could be found on her record were minor traffic violations that were resolved without conflict.

So many Americans face silent injustice in the hands of our courts, and go on to face unfair prison sentences. Regardless of innocence, there are many people who receive inflated sentences for minor crimes, and this is something that can change a person's life forever. Ebony has stated that she and the others at the scene did not break and enter and Ebony had nothing to do with the weapon being discharged, but the decision of the court could result in her being sent away from her children for upwards of 20 years. That is a price that no one should be expected to pay for something of this magnitude. We are desperate to help Ebony either have the charges dropped or to lower the sentence to something that is reasonable, and limit the number of years she is kept away from her children.

Our sister, Tatiana, has been researching and has found a lawyer who we believe has a good record and reputation. The fundraising goal we decided on is $7,000, which is slightly higher than the initial cost to account for any fees as the process goes on. We've committed to donating excess funds to organizations that support the ongoing Black Lives Matter movement, such as bail funds for protesters and mutual aid funds. Once we reach that point, we will choose one or more organizations that are in need of support.

I know this explanation is lacking in specifics. The information is coming to us slowly, in bits and pieces, but I will be updating this page with whatever we learn, as soon as we learn it. If you decide to donate, please know that my entire family thanks you from the bottom of our hearts. We thank you for your trust, and for your kindness.

We aren't asking for you to pass judgement -- that will be in the hands of the court. We only ask that you help us in giving Ebony the tools she needs to have a fighting chance.
