Workers' Dignity Staff Strike Fund

The staff of Worker’s Dignity/Dignidad Obrera (WDDO) are on STRIKE!!! They are protesting the unilateral decision of the founders to circumvent the established processes of the non-profit body and fire the Executive Director through their outsized influence over the 2 member board, totally disregarding the desires of the staff and the community. The community that Worker’s Dignity has worked so hard under Cecilia’s leadership to serve stands with the staff in their STRIKE against the board’s decision.

Under Prado’s leadership, Worker’s Dignity has flourished in immigrant communities around Nashville winning massive gains for workers and developing the capacity of community organizers to more adequately serve the people of Nashville. As a part of this effort, the staff was attempting to make the board more democratic and this has been met as a threat to the power of the founders, who haven’t done the work with working class people in years.

These founders don’t go to the funerals of fallen workers like Marvin; they don’t go to the educational seminars; they aren’t involved in the work of actually materially organizing Nashvillians towards a more democratic form; they are interested in maintaining their own power and influence even at the expense of the extremely valuable work being done. We haven’t seen them in years (some people on staff have never met them despite having worked at the organization for over a year), but they are involved in spreading and/or participating in any gossip associated with the organization due to the clout and influence they still have in the city.

The staff and Cecilia have also been trying to diversify the board by adding to the current 2 members who lack a diverse outlook by bringing the board back up to its full capacity of 12 people to reflect the community and the staff by including more working-class members from a diversity of backgrounds, specifically elders, youth, queer, trans, and femme workers. Since November, the 2 board members have postponed or sabotaged the meetings to discuss this matter and have, in more than one instance, insinuated that they feared that their power was taken away, which was not the case.
