The famous Broad Street Market in Midtown, Harrisburg (Pennsylvania) has a new vendor boasting a fresh vegan menu full of surprise, history and flavor. Ward of Health is soon to be Harrisburg’s prime location for soulful, holistic plant-based cuisine, with your help! Like many other small businesses during this time, we’re making it work, but capital is essential for security and growth. Change is necessary, but uncertain times shouldn't stop us from embarking on new opportunities. We are seeking your time and assistance to aid in the transition of our home-based business to a physical location at the Broad Street Market.
Who/What is Ward of Health?
Ward of Health (commonly referred to as WOH) is a plant-based vegan food service located in Harrisburg that was founded by Craig Ward Jr. They boast a festive menu with items ranging from plant-based crab cakes and crunchwraps, to colorful smoothies and refreshing elixirs.
Craig is a Milton Hershey School graduate originally hailing from Allentown, and became a whole food plant-based vegan two years ago when he began serving at Café 1500. He has over 10 years of cooking, serving and bartending experience from establishments such as Texas Roadhouse, Rockbass and Arooga’s.
His interest and concern for health and well-being was sparked when his mother was diagnosed with cancer. He was able to see the consequences of a poor diet and its adverse effects. During his mother's journey of recovery, Craig discovered the power of using food and herbs as medicine after they showed more positive healing effects than the regularly used chemotherapy. After becoming a father years later, he chose to stop the cycle of disease in his family by changing his eating habits and educating his daughter on the importance of eating well.
Craig founded Ward of Health due to the lack of local vegan food options with true nutritional integrity. That lack or variety coupled with his hospitality experience inspired him enough to create the meal-prep and catering business that is taking Harrisburg by storm. One of his biggest joys is seeing the surprise on a new customer’s face, one who didn't know what to expect but ends up biting down into a pleasant surprise. Now his ambitions are to take Ward of Health further and open this physical location at Broad Street Market.
What will the money be used for?
Our goal of $30,000 will be solely be used for overhead expenses such as purchasing equipment, payroll, employee uniforms, rent, utilities and slight construction that we would perform on our station to comply with the new standards of precaution, safety and cleanliness brought about by the recent pandemic.
Some of necessary equipment that Ward of Health would need to operate include: 8-Burner Countertop ($3,052), High-Speed Accelerated Cooking Oven ($7,663), Refrigerated Prep Table ($3,000), Worktop Refrigerator ($2,883), Convention Oven ($1,399), Stainless Steel Equipment Stand ($471.41), Wood Top Work Table ($492.49), two Aluminum Dunnage Racks ($63.98) comes out to a rough estimated cost of $19,024.88. Aside from these necessary equipment items, other overhead costs include things such as our POS system, employee payroll, and cooking/serving essentials such as spatulas, pots, tongs, cleaning rags and floor mats, which is we are seeking to raise $30,000.
The light construction that would need to be completed may include (but may not be limited to) the installation of plexiglass at the ordering and receiving counters, and the addition of electrical outlets and plumbing to comply with current regulations.
